Motherwort: The Divine Feminine Herb for Emotional Balance and Womans Health.

I have always felt that Motherwort holds the archetype of the Divine Feminine. She does not belong to one phase of life, but to many.
She is the maiden (she who has not bleed yet), soft and open.
She is the mother (she who gives her blood out), holding, giving, nurturing and fiercely protective.
She is the crone (she who holds her blood within her), wise and pulling on the threads that unravel illusion.
She is all of them - at once.
Her physical form shows us all of this. Motherwort is the most beloved of plant allies, she holds gentleness, softness and yet, is fiercely protective at the same time. She guards what is hers, keeping it safe for the generations to come. Her leaves are soft and sway gently in the breeze, they always seem to me to be in the shape of a heart - her seeds though - she guards with her Lioness spirit, she cloaks them in prickles, but when the time is right, she releases them freely. But protects them with tiny thorns until that time arrives.
She is the full expression of the Divine Feminine, moving through the cycles of creation, holding, and then releasing. Light and shadow. Growth and decay. Tenderness and fierce, unwavering truth.
And when you sit with her, you feel that immediately.
Not as something separate from you - but as something that can awaken within you. She reminds woman that we can hold these things too.
She meets you in the places where life has stretched you. Where your heart feels full, tight and overwhelmed. Where your nervous system feels tight, beneath the surface, never quite settling. Where you have been strong for too long, and no one has held you in return. Oh how I know that feeling. She always tells me it is safe to let others in.
Motherwort has always been known as a herb of the heart. Her latin name is Leonurus cardiaca - and it really says it all. She has the heart of a Lioness. But this is not just poetic. For the physical heart is one of her strongest domains. Her affinity for the cardiovascular system - for palpitations, tension, and a racing, unsettled rhythm - mirrors her deeper work. She steadies the physical heart in the same way she steadies the emotional one.
She does not numb it.
She regulates it.
Bringing rhythm back where there has been strain. Softening constriction without taking away feeling. This is the medicine of a woman who has lived. She moves first through the heart space. Where grief, love, fear, and longing all live side by side. Where we armour ourselves to keep going. Where we closed, just enough, to function.
Motherwort does not force the heart open.
She makes it safe to soften.

From there, she travels into the solar plexus - the place of will, control, and responsibility. This is where we hold everything together. Where we grip. Where we carry more than we were ever meant to. Her bitterness begins to speak here. Because bitterness is not punishment - it is activation. She stimulates digestion, yes. But she also stimulates movement. She asks the body to respond again. To wake up from stagnation. To release what has been held too tightly.
And deeper still, she roots into the womb and sacral space. The seat of emotion. Creation. Cycles. This is where Motherwort reveals her full nature as the Divine Feminine. The maiden who feels deeply. The mother who holds and nourishes. The crone who sees clearly and is no longer willing to bow to illusion, to what is not true. Here, she begins to stir. Not forcefully. Not all at once. But steadily.
Gently bringing awareness to what has been buried - emotions unspoken, truths ignored, patterns repeated. In traditional practice, this is where her role in women’s health becomes clear. She has long been used to support the body through hormonal transitions, irregular cycles, and times of emotional intensity. Because she understands rhythm. She understands that the body is not separate from emotion. That cycles are not problems to fix, but patterns to support.
Motherwort carries a powerful planetary duality - she is held between Mars and Venus. Mars gives her strength. The ability to stand steady in intensity. To protect. To anchor. To hold ground. Venus gives her softness. Connection. Nurturing. The return to relationship with self. Together, they create something whole. A medicine that does not ask you to choose between being soft or strong. But teaches you how to be both - and how to mix each polarity to find a middle ground.
Her bitterness is part of her wholeness. It is the taste many of us resist - and yet, it is the very thing that awakens something deep inside us. In water, her bitterness can be overwhelming, and much of her deeper chemistry remains only partially extracted. This is why I prefer experiencing her as a tincture. Drop by drop, her medicine can be delivered in a way that allows the body to receive her without resistance. Concentrated. Complete.
And when prepared from the fresh plant, something even more profound is held. Not just her chemical constituents - but her full vitality. The imprint of her, as a living being, a living plant. The moment she was gathered, with respect, reverence and thankfullness. The fullness of her expression before drying, before diminishing. It is, in many ways, Motherwort in her most intact form. The fresh plant tincture holds not just the chemistry of Motherwort, but her living vitality - the immediacy of her as she was growing, breathing, and rooted in the earth. There is a brightness to it. A presence that feels closer, more alive, more intact. It is, in many ways, the plant as she truly is. And perhaps this is where her deeper work reveals itself.

Because Motherwort does not simply comfort.
She stirs.
She stirs the truth beneath the surface. The feelings we have avoided. The exhaustion we have carried quietly. The quiet knowing that something within us needs care, attention, and honesty.
But she does this in a held way.
A supported way.
Never overwhelming.
She teaches us that we can feel deeply without being consumed. That we can soften without losing our strength. That we can be both held and powerful at the same time.
And this is where everything comes together.
Because Motherwort does not separate the physical from the emotional. The spiritual from the physiological. The light from the dark.
She is the reminder that these were never separate to begin with. That the racing heart, the tight chest, the hormonal shifts, the emotional waves - all of it belongs to one system. One body. One experience.
She is the Divine Feminine who does not turn away from the shadow. Who sits beside you in the overwhelm. Who steadies you in the intensity.
Who allows you to feel without losing yourself. She does not take the emotion away. She holds you within it.
Until your breath deepens.
Your body softens.
And something within you remembers…
You were never meant to carry it all alone.
And most importantly, the truth. That you are everything and nothing. All at the same time.
